When Should Your Child First See a Dentist?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that babies and toddlers see a dentist within six months of their first tooth emerging and no later than the first birthday. After the first visit, your child will need to see a dentist at least once every six months. Early dental visits help set the stage for lifelong healthy smiles.

Dental Exams: Twice-yearly dental exams help our team identify and treat tooth decay, gum disease, or any oral health problems as they develop. That helps prevent minor issues from progressing and becoming bigger ones down the road.

Dental Cleanings: During your little one's dental cleaning, we remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum line, which lowers the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We also remove surface stains, leaving your child's smile bright, minty clean, and fresh.

Patient Education: Our "Bristle Kids" team loves to teach our young patients how to care for their smiles. You’ll always find us demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques and discussing healthy habits for long-term healthy smiles.

Fluoride Treatments: Fluoride is a powerful cavity-fighter that strengthens the tooth enamel making it more resistant to cavities. It can also reverse the early stages of tooth decay, keeping your child's smile healthy and sound.

Dental Sealants: Your child's premolars and molars have pits and crevices on their chewing surfaces that trap food particles and plaque, providing cavity-causing bacteria the perfect environment to thrive. Dental sealants are protective coatings that smooth away and seal off any grooves or depressions, lowering the risk of tooth decay.

Tooth-Colored Fillings: We're pleased to offer tooth-colored fillings to treat tooth decay and cavities. The procedure is quick and virtually painless, restoring your child’s oral health with seamless results.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): SDF is an antimicrobial and remineralizing liquid that halts the progression of tooth decay - all without shots or the drill. It can be an excellent option in certain situations until a child is ready for a more permanent restoration or until a decayed baby tooth naturally falls out.

Stainless Steel Crowns: Stainless steel crowns offer a quick and simple solution to protect damaged baby teeth until their permanent replacements are ready to come in. They are made of a strong and durable material that withstands daily wear and tear.

Tooth-Colored Crowns: Our tooth-colored pediatric crowns are ideal for baby teeth that show when your child smiles, providing the protection needed until they naturally fall out. Our aesthetic restorations are created right here at our Chicago office.

Space Maintainers: One of the most critical functions of baby teeth is saving space for the permanent teeth, allowing them to come in the proper alignment. If a tooth is lost prematurely, we may recommend placing a space maintainer to prevent the neighboring teeth from shifting and ensure the adult teeth have room to come in the correct position.
