Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Chicago, Illinois

The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Unfortunately, most people don't have room in their mouths to accommodate the new set of molars, leaving them at risk of complications. If your wisdom teeth need to be extracted, you're in good hands. Our Bristle Dental Studio team never spares any effort to ensure your experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Why Would I Need to Have My Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Your wisdom teeth may not need to be extracted if they are healthy, fully erupted, and positioned correctly. However, these third molars are notorious for causing problems, often necessitating their removal.

Erupting wisdom teeth can be impacted or trapped in the jawbone and can also grow at various angles, placing pressure on the neighboring healthy teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause serious problems, including infection or cysts that can damage the adjacent teeth and jawbone. Insufficient room for your wisdom teeth can lead to crowding or alignment issues, often requiring orthodontic treatment.

According to the American Dental Association, removing wisdom teeth may be indicated if changes occur, including pain, gum disease, extensive tooth decay, repeated infection, cysts, tumors, damage to the nearby teeth, or other complications. Our team will evaluate your unique needs and help you determine whether wisdom tooth removal is right for you.

What Is the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure?

Here's a look at what you can expect during the wisdom teeth extraction process:

Initial Consultation: We will evaluate your wisdom teeth and ask about your health history and current medications. We will also take digital x-rays of your wisdom teeth to plan treatment. We may recommend a CBCT scan for a 3D view and more detailed information about the position of the problematic teeth and their proximity to your nerves and sinuses.

During the Procedure: We will administer a local anesthetic and nitrous oxide sedation, if needed, for your comfort. We are happy to offer simple and surgical wisdom teeth extractions, depending on your unique needs. You may feel pressure right before we remove the tooth, but you should not feel any pain. We may need to place stitches to promote healing in the extraction site.

After the Procedure: After your wisdom tooth extraction, we will place a gauze for you to bite down on to stop bleeding and to help a blood clot form in the tooth's socket. We will provide you with post-operative care instructions and may prescribe pain medication for use as needed to relieve any discomfort.

Promoting Healing After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

As soon as you have your wisdom teeth removed, healing will begin. We encourage you to avoid strenuous activity for a few days and use an ice pack to reduce swelling. It’s important to refrain from using a straw, spitting, or smoking for 48 hours because you don't want to dislodge the clot forming in the tooth's empty socket. Otherwise, you may develop a very painful condition known as dry socket.

After about 24 hours, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water several times daily. If you notice increased pain or swelling or have any concerns, contact our office for guidance.
